Motorola
Motorola shares rally
MANHASSET, N.Y. — Communications company Motorola Inc. recorded GAAP earnings of $1.38 billion, or 55 cents per share on sales of $10.88 billion, up from $933 million, or 37 cents per share on sales of $8.4 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Motorola (Schaumburg, Ill.) said its Mobile Devices Segment sales totaled $7.14 billion, up 46 percent from a year ago, with operating earnings rising from $493 million to $799 million year-over-year. Motorola shipped a record 51.9 million handsets in the second quarter, and reported a 22 percent global handset market share, up 4.3 percentage points from the year-ago quarter.
Sales in Motorola's Networks and Enterprise Segment were $2.9 billion, up 3 percent compared with the year-ago quarter and up 15 percent compared with the first quarter of 2006. Operating earnings decreased to $386 million, compared with $494 million in the year-ago quarter, but increased sequentially from $299 million the first quarter of 2006.
For the third quarter, Motorola expects sales of $10.9 billion to $11.1 billion, up 20 to 23 percent versus the prior-year quarter, driven primarily by continuing momentum in the Mobile Devices business.
